Béketárgyalási kísérlet István főherceg és Jellasics horvát bán közt, 1848. szeptember 21. A találkozójára a balatoni Kisfaludy gőzös fedélzetén került volna sor; a képen a nádor és a főherceg a Kisfaludy Károly költő után elnevezett első balatoni gőzhajót gróf Széchenyi István kezdeményezésére építették, és 1846 és 1887 között volt szolgálatban. A Veszprémig hátráló magyar sereg István nádor vezetésével készült a horvátok elleni harcra, ám miután Jelačić meghiúsította a diplomáciai találkozót, a nádor lemondott. Távozása előtt még kineveztette Lamberg Ferencet katonai főparancsnokká és Vay Miklóst a kormányalakítás felelősévé, hogy megkíséreljék a békés rendezést.

An attempted peace negotiation between Archduke Stephen and Croatian Ban Jelačić on September 21, 1848. The meeting was to take place aboard the Balaton steamer Kisfaludy; in the picture, the Palatine and the Archduke appear on the first steamboat of Lake Balaton, built at the initiative of Count István Széchenyi, and remained in service between 1846 and 1887. The Hungarian army, retreating to Veszprém, prepared to fight the Croats under the leadership of Palatine Stephen, whose presence signaled the legality of the resistance. After Jelačić thwarted a planned diplomatic meeting, the Palatine resigned, but first appointed Ferenc Lamberg as commander-in-chief and Miklós Vay to form a government in an attempt to broker peace.
The title is provided in four languages (German, Hungarian, Italian, and Czech) along the four sides of the image. The print is plate number 36 from the second part of Anton Ziegler’s Vaterländische Bilder-Chronik aus der Geschichte des österreichischen Kaiserstaates (Patriotic Pictorial Chronicle from the History of the Austrian Imperial State), published by Benko in Vienna, 1850. This second part contains a description of the 1848–1849 events in Hungary, illustrated with 28 cityscapes (including Buda, Buda and Pest, Bratislava, Prague, Vienna, Belgrade, Trieste, Graz, Innsbruck, etc.), as well as 56 historical genre scenes and battle paintings.
