Traités sur les aimans artificiels
Paris, 1752. Chez Hippolyte-Louis Guérin l'aîné.vij + [1] + cxx + 160p. + IV kihajtható metsz. t.
John Michell (1724–1793) és John Canton (1718–1772) neves angol természettudósok munkáinak fordítása és összevonása. Első francia kiadás, a fordító Antoine Rivoire (Père Rivoire, jezsuita szerzetes).
A XVIII. századi fizikatörténet egyik kiemelkedő alapműve, amely a mesterséges mágnesek előállításának úttörő módszereit tárgyalja. A korszakot megelőzően a tengeri hajózásban és a tudományos kísérletek során jobbára csak korlátozott erejű, drága természetes mágnesköveket alkalmaztak. A valódi tudományos áttörést John Michell angol polihisztor – akit a tudománytörténet a fekete lyukak elméletének előfutáraként is számon tart – és John Canton brit fizikus hozta el. Eljárásukkal képesek voltak acélrudakat mesterségesen, rendkívül erős mágneses tulajdonságokkal felruházni, forradalmasítva ezzel a korabeli fizikát.
A bélívek tiszták. Ritka.
A translation and compilation of the works of the renowned English natural scientists John Michell (1724–1793) and John Canton (1718–1772). First French edition, translated by Antoine Rivoire (Père Rivoire, a Jesuit monk).
A foundational work in the history of 18th-century physics, discussing pioneering methods for the production of artificial magnets. Prior to this era, maritime navigation and scientific experiments largely relied on expensive natural lodestones of limited strength. The true scientific breakthrough was brought about by the English polymath John Michell - also recognized in the history of science as a forerunner to the theory of black holes - and the British physicist John Canton. Through their method, they were able to artificially imbue steel bars with exceptionally strong magnetic properties, thereby revolutionizing contemporary physics.
The volume discusses in detail the techniques for increasing the strength of natural magnets, the methods for altering magnetic poles, and the production of compass needles that were far more accurate and durable than any previous iteration, which was a matter of vital importance for naval navigation. At the end of the book, there are four detailed folding engraved plates depicting magnetic experiments and setups.
Preceding the main text is a comprehensive, 120-page historical preface by the translator (Préface historique du traducteur). This extensive introduction offers a profound insight into the scientific landscape of the French Enlightenment, meticulously documenting the experiments and methods concerning magnetism conducted by the finest minds at the French Royal Academy of Sciences, including Duhamel du Monceau and M. Antheaume.
