Montesquieu (1689–1755) politikai, jogi és közgazdasági gondolkodás történetében kiemelkedő jelentőségű művének kiadástörténete a francia felvilágosodás legösszetettebb könyvészeti fejezete. A névtelen első kiadás 1748 októberének végén jelent meg Genfben, a Barrillot & Fils kiadónál, évszám nélkül, két negyedrét kötetben, Mme de Tencin anyagi támogatásával. Mivel a Bordeaux-ban tartózkodó Montesquieu a teljes anonimitás miatt megtagadott minden közvetlen levelezést a genfi nyomdával — így még Barrillot sem tudta a kilétét —, a korrekciók csúsztak, s a kiadás rendkívül hibás és hiányos maradt. A hibák orvoslására Mme de Tencin még 1748 végén 500 különálló Errata-lapot nyomtatott az eladatlan kötetekhez. A mű robbanásszerű sikere 1749 januárjában megindította a kalózkiadások hullámát: a hírhedt párizsi (Prault-féle) hamisítvány a genfi nevet tévesen, egyetlen „r”-rel nyomtatta (Barillot), s a pótlapok hiányoztak belőle (három változata közül csak az első tartalmazott Errata-t). 1749-ben megjelentek a legális kiadások is: Genfben a Barrillot bocsátotta ki a 2. kiadást (új tartalomjegyzékkel, térképpel és a kimaradt javításokat tartalmazó Avertissement-tel), Párizsban pedig a Huart kiadó (Mme de Tencin és Claude Gros de Boze szervezésében) jelentette meg a szerző által átdolgozott (revue et corrigée) hivatalos szöveget. A két év alatt 22 kiadást megért főművet ért jansenista támadásokra Montesquieu 1750-ben megírta védőbeszédét (Défense), ám a könyvet 1751-ben az Index-re tették. A korabeli bibliográfiák hiányosak: sem Brunet, sem Tchemerzine nem dokumentálta teljes körűen a variánsokat. Jelen példány 1749-es legális genfi kiadás, amely nem tartalmaz Errata-lapot, sem térképet. Mivel a klasszikus szakirodalomból hiányzik, valódi dokumentálatlan könyvészeti kuriózumnak számít.
Egységes, korabeli, egészbőr kötés, a gerincen gazdag, aranyozott virágmintával. A széleknél és sarkaknál minimális, a korból fakadó kopással. Körül pettyezett lapélekkel. Tiszta belívekkel. Szép példány.

The original edition of Montesquieu's anonymously written work was published in 2 volumes, 4to, by Barrillot & Fils in Geneva, in October 1748 (although undated), funded by Mme de Tencin. The work's instant success triggered a wave of pirated editions in January 1749, most notably a notorious Paris counterfeit (Prault) that misspelled the Geneva publisher's name with a single "r" (Barillot) and omitted the cancel leaves —with only the first of its three variants containing an Errata. The authorized editions followed in 1749: in Geneva, Barrillot published the second edition (featuring a new table of contents, a map, and an Avertissement detailing corrections that arrived too late for the main text), while in Paris, the publisher Huart (organized by Mme de Tencin and Claude Gros de Boze) issued the author's revised and corrected (revue et corrigée) text. Despite reaching 22 editions across Europe in just two years, Jansenist attacks prompted Montesquieu to write his defense (Défense) in 1750, though the work was ultimately placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1751.
Standard bibliographies remain incomplete: neither Brunet nor Tchemerzine fully recorded all existing variants. Present copy is a 1749 legal Geneva copy—bearing the correct double "r" spelling (Barrillot) and completely lacking an Errata leaf. Unrecorded in classic reference works, it represents a genuine undocumented bibliographical rarity.
