Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) francia filozófus, író és lexikográfus röviddel rotterdami költözése után írta meg a Critique générale-t (Általános kritika Maimbourg úr kálvinizmus történetéről). Ebben rendkívüli kritikai tehetségét mutatta meg, ugyanakkor elutasította a hagyományos felekezeti viták hangnemét. Bár részben figyelembe vette a református közönség elvárásait, válaszát nem korlátozta a Maimbourg-per iránymutatásaira; ezzel egyidejűleg filozófiai elmélkedést folytatott a történelem gyakorlatáról és alkalmazásáról.
Korabeli pergamenkötés, a gerincen kézírásos címfelirattal. A kötés kissé elvált a könyvtesttől, ezt leszámítva jó állapotban lévő példány. Ritka.

French philosopher, author, and lexicographer Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) wrote the Critique générale shortly after his relocation to Rotterdam. There, he revealed formidable critical talents, yet he refused to adopt the conventional tone of confessional controversy. While partially addressing the expectations of the Reformed public, he did not limit his response to the instruction of the Maimbourg trial, but simultaneously conducted a philosophical reflection on the practice and use of history.
