Lithograph depicting the Battle of Győr (Raab) on June 28, 1849, a significant event of the Hungarian War of Independence, with a fairy tale-like view of the city. The composition is dominated by the equestrian figure of the young Emperor Franz Joseph I in military uniform, signaling the outcome of the battle.
The title is provided in four languages (German, Hungarian, Italian, and Czech) along the four sides of the image. The print is plate number 47 from the second part of Anton Ziegler’s Vaterländische Bilder-Chronik aus der Geschichte des österreichischen Kaiserstaates (Patriotic Pictorial Chronicle from the History of the Austrian Imperial State), published by Benko in Vienna, 1850. This second part contains a description of the 1848–1849 events in Hungary, illustrated with 28 cityscapes (including Buda, Buda and Pest, Bratislava, Prague, Vienna, Belgrade, Trieste, Graz, Innsbruck, etc.), as well as 56 historical genre scenes and battle paintings.
