Fólió (43 × 35 cm). 114 korabeli, kézi színezésű kőnyomatú táblával Edward Neale nyomán, és 2 színezett kőnyomatú térképpel. Korabeli egységes vörös félborjúbőr kötés (jelzés: Jarrolds, Norwich) 2-2 zöld gerinccímkével és gerincaranyozással; az élek, a sarkok, a gerincaranyozás helyenként kopottas.

Első kiadás. „A gyönyörű táblák különböző tollazatban ábrázolják a madarakat” (Anker). „Jól megírt terepnaplók sorozata, jó minőségű táblákkal kísérve” (Zimmer). – Helyenként foxing, ami főként a szöveget érinti, a táblákon alig észlelhető.

 XIX. századi brit ornitológia egyik legfontosabb forrásműve. Booth, a tehetős ornitológus és vadász, eredetileg tizenöt füzetben adta ki művét. A munka kiemelten foglalkozik a Skót-felföldről és a Norfolk Broads vidékéről származó példányokkal; a litográfiákat Neale készítette olyan madarak alapján, amelyeket maga Booth preparált, tömött ki és helyezett vitrinbe; nagy gondot fordított arra, hogy a madarakat a rájuk jellemző módon és a megfelelő élőhelyükön mutassa be. Ezek a példányok képezték az alapját annak a brightoni Dyke Road-i magánmúzeumnak, amelyet Booth építtetett, majd később Brighton városára hagyományozott; a múzeum katalógusát 1876-ban ő maga állította össze.

Ezek az 1874-ben megnyílt Booth Természettudományi Múzeumban ma is látható diorámák a legelső természettudományi diorámáknak számítanak (még C. Akeley 1889-es milwaukee-i diorámáit is megelőzik).

(A few pale spots, primarily to text.) Contemporary red half morocco, gilt spine, marbled boards and edges (some very minor rubbing.)

FIRST EDITION of this “series of well written field notes accompanied by good plates” (Anker). Booth, a wealthy ornithologist and sportsman, issued his work in 15 parts designed to be bound in 3 volumes. One of the major 19th century source works of British ornithology. The work favors specimens from the Scottish Highlands and Norfolk Broads, lithographed by Neale based on specimens which Booth prepared, stuffed, and cased himself; he took great care to present the birds in a characteristic manner and in the correct habitat. His specimens formed the basis of a private museum in Dyke Road, Bright, built by Booth and later bequeathed to the Corporation of Brighton; he prepared a catalogue for the museum in 1876.
