Ezt a könyvet az ország akkoriban megjelent leghitelesebb beszámolójaként tartják számon (Cox). Az eredeti német szövegből Johann Caspar Scheuchzer, Sir Hans Sloane (ír orvos, természettudós, gyűjtő) könyvtárosa fordította, aki a szerző halála után szerezte meg Kaempfer kéziratát és botanikai mintáit. A német eredeti szöveg csak ötven évvel később jelent meg nyomtatásban. A klasszikus, alapvető mű Japánról abból az időszakból, amikor az európaiak számára általános beutazási tilalom volt érvényben. Regarded as the most authoritative contemporary account of Japan available in Europe at the time (Cox). A classic and foundational work, it offers a rare glimpse into the country during the sakoku period, a time of strict isolationist policy that banned almost all European entry. The text was translated from the original German manuscript by Johann Caspar Scheuchzer, librarian to Sir Hans Sloane. Sloane, an Irish physician, naturalist, and collector, acquired Kaempfer's manuscript and botanical specimens after the author's death. Notably, the original German text did not appear in print until fifty years after this English translation.
The 45 impressive copper engravings encompass a handsome map of Japan (Walter 76A), as well as regional maps, town plans, and city views including Jedo (Edo) and Nagasaki. Additional plates illustrate mythological and religious scenes, native flora and fauna (including tea plants), island topography, architecture, and numerous writing tables detailing the Japanese alphabet.
Bound in contemporary full calf with raised bands and gilt spine labels. Features the armorial bookplate of Sir Robert Eden, first Baronet of Maryland, on the verso of the boards. A good, wide-margined, and scarce copy overall, though lacking pages 17-20 (quire E) of the Appendix in Volume II.
