A világhírű zeneszerző Ludwig von Beethoven (1770-1827) holttestének első exhumálásáról készült feljegyzésekből kiderül, hogy Beethoven koponyáját nem tették a cinkkoporsóba a többi maradvány mellé (Wiener Zentralfriedhof), hanem ideiglenesen Gerhard von Breuningnak adták át megőrzésre. Néhány nappal később, október 16-án és 20-án Rottmayer elkészítette a koponyáról az itt látható fényképet, amelyről több lenyomat is készült. Ez a fénykép az exhumáláskor kilenc darabra tört koponyát mutatja. Albumin, kartonra kasírozva. M: 6,3×10,3 cm.

Versoján a német nyelvű, fakszimile szöveggel. A Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde vezetősége kizárólagos jogot ad a fotográfus J. B. Rottmayer számára az általa lefényképezett Beethoven és Schubert koponyák reprodukálására és értékesítésére, azonban azzal a megszorítással, hogy nem állíthatók ki a kirakatban.

Records of the first exhumation of the body of the world-famous composer Ludwig von Beethoven (1770-1827) show that Beethoven's skull was not placed in the zinc coffin with the other remains (Wiener Zentralfriedhof), but was temporarily given to Gerhard von Breuning for safekeeping. A few days later, on 16 and 20 October, Rottmayer took the photograph of the skull shown here, from which several impressions were made. This photograph shows the skull, which was broken into nine pieces during exhumation. M: 6,3×10,3 cm. Verso with facsimile text in German.
