 A borítón a szerző, Szent-Györgyi Albert dedikációjával: “Halasy Nagy József barátomnak// szeretettel// Szent-Györgyi Albert”. Szent-Györgyi a kiadvány megjelenési évében kapott orvosi és fiziológiai Nobel-díjat „a biológiai égés folyamatával kapcsolatos felfedezései, különösen a C-vitaminnal és fumársav katalizátorral végzett kutatómunkája elismeréseképpen”. Ekkor már több mint egy évtizede kutatta a biológiai égést és a C-vitamint is, e kiadvány pedig addigi munkájának szintézise. Ahogyan a tudós az előszóban is megjegyzi, célja ezzel a kiadvánnyal, hogy közérthetőbben is megfogalmazza tudományos felfedezéseit. Az utószó datálása 1937. október 18., a Nobel-díjat pedig 1937. október 28-án ítélte neki a stockholmi Karolinska Intézet. A dedikáció címzettje, Halasy-Nagy József (1885-1976) filozófus, műfordító, egyetemi tanár. Az 1930-as és ‘40-es években Halasy-Nagy is tanított mind a pécsi, mind a szegedi egyetemeken, csakúgy, mint Szent-Györgyi, vélhetően innen ismerték egymást. On the cover, with the author's inscription, Albert Szent-Györgyi: "To my friend József Halasy Nagy // with love // Albert Szent-Györgyi". Szent-Györgyi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in the year of publication "in recognition of his discoveries on the process of biological combustion, in particular his research on vitamin C and the fumaric acid catalyst". At that time, he had already been researching biological combustion and vitamin C for over a decade, and this publication is a synthesis of his work to date. As the scientist notes in the foreword, his aim with this publication is to put his scientific discoveries into a more accessible form. The foreword is dated 18 October 1937, and the Nobel Prize was awarded to him on 28 October 1937 by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. The dedication is addressed to József Halasy-Nagy (1885-1976), philosopher, literary translator and university professor. In the 1930s and '40s, Halasy-Nagy taught at both the Universities of Pécs and Szeged, as did Szent-Györgyi, and it is thought that this is how they knew each other.
