A highly significant third edition of La République des Turcs, issued with a new title. This version includes a new epistle and observations on the Turkish language, making it the first volume in France – and the only one in the 16th century – to discuss Turkish grammar. As with the author's other works, its primary objective was to alert French monarchs to the resources of a potential adversary and, above all, to provide a model for the governance and expansion of their own empire.

The author, Guillaume Postel (1510–1581), was a unique figure of the Renaissance: an orientalist, philologist, and theosophist. A humanist of immense erudition, he served as a professor of mathematics and Oriental languages at the Collège de France and was widely known for his travels. He undertook his first journey to the East between 1535 and 1537 at the behest of Marguerite de Navarre, as a member of the entourage of Jean de la Forest, the King’s ambassador to Constantinople. His extensive body of work comprises more than fifty titles. He advocated for reconciliation between Muslims and Christians, a stance that brought him into conflict with the Inquisition.

Contemporary full leather, marbled binding, with a smooth spine featuring gilt floral decoration. Complete, with a table of contents and errata at the end of the work. Apart from water staining on the last few leaves, this is a clean and very good copy.

A La République des Turcs igen jelentős, új címmel megjelent harmadik kiadása. A mű egy új episztolát és a török nyelvre vonatkozó megállapításokat tartalmaz, így ez az első kötet Franciaországban és az egyetlen a XVI. században, amely a török nyelvtant tárgyalja. Ahogy a szerző többi művének, úgy ennek is elsődleges célja volt, hogy felhívja a francia uralkodók figyelmét egy lehetséges ellenfél erőforrásaira, és mindenekelőtt mintát adjon nekik birodalmuk kormányzásához és kiterjesztéséhez. 

A szerző, az orientalista, filológus és teozófus Guillaume Postel (1510-1581) a reneszánsz egyik sajátos alakja volt. A hatalmas műveltségű humanista a Collège de France matematika és keleti nyelvek professzora, aki egyben utazásairól volt ismert. Első keleti útját 1535 és 1537 között Navarrai Margit megbízásából tette, Jean de la Forest, a király konstantinápolyi követe kíséretének tagjaként. Munkássága kiterjedt, több mint ötven művet számlál. A muszlimok és keresztények megbékélését hirdette, ami miatt konfliktusba került az inkvizícióval.
