A francia ügyvéd és politikus Francois Hotman (latinul: Franciscus Hotomanus, 1524–1590), egy „elsőrangú tudós” (Strintzing), „azon jelentős francia jogtudósok közé tartozik, akik a 16. században menekültként érkeztek Svájcba és Németországba, és nagy hatást gyakoroltak a német jogtudományra. Mint kora sok nagy jogásza, ő is filológus és az antikvitás szakértője volt. Jogászként mesterien alkalmazta mind a régiségkutató-kritikai, mind a dogmatikai jogtudományi módszert” (H. Liermann, NDB).

The French lawyer and politician Francois Hotman (Latin: Franciscus Hotomanus, 1524–1590), a "scholar of the first rank" (Strintzing), "belongs to the group of important French jurists who came to Switzerland and Germany as refugees in the 16th century and exerted a great influence on German jurisprudence. Like many great jurists of his time, he was also a philologist and expert on antiquity. As a jurist, he masterfully handled both the antiquarian-critical and the dogmatic method of jurisprudence" (H.
