Robert Simson (1687-1768) tanulmányait 1701-ben kezdte meg a Glasgow-i Egyetemen, és tíz évvel később, 24 évesen, első diplomája után egyből katedrát kapott a matematika tanszéken. Jelen munkája először 1735-ben jelent meg, melyet részben bevezetésnek szánt a Pergai Apollónioszról szóló értekezéséhez; itt Simson inkább a tiszta geometria, mint az algebra módszereit alkalmazta. Legnagyobb hatású műve valószínűleg Euklidész Elemek című művének végleges kiadása volt, amelyet 1756-ban jelentetett meg. Az Euklidész-műve és jelen munkája a kúpszögmetszetekről számos kiadást ért meg, és több nyelvre is lefordították.

Korabeli egészbőr-kötésben, bordázott és aranyozott gerinc. A gerinc sérült. Pár lap a sarkokon sérült, minimális szövegveszteséggel.

Robert Simson (1687-1768) began his studies at the University of Glasgow in 1701, and ten years later, at the age of 24, he was awarded a chair in mathematics after his first degree. His present work was first published in 1735 and was intended in part as an introduction to treatise of Apollonius of Perga; here Simson used the methods of pure geometry rather than algebra. His most influential work was probably the definitive edition of Euclid's Elements, published in 1756. His work on Euclid and his present work on conic sections have been published in many editions and translated into several languages.

In contemporary full leather binding, raised bands and gilt spine. Spine is damaged. A few pages are damaged at the corners with minimal loss of text.
