Heinrich Georg Bronn (1800–1862) német zoológus és paleontológus főműve, a Lethaea geognostica a 19. századi földtan és őslénytan egyik legfontosabb mérföldköve, a tudományterület korabeli alapműve. A könyv részletes illusztrációkon és leírásokon keresztül mutatja be a különböző kőzet- és hegységformációkra leginkább jellemző vezérkövületeket (fosszíliákat). Bronn volt az egyik első olyan tudós, aki statisztikai és időrendi rendszert vitt az ősmaradványok vizsgálatába, megalapozva ezzel a modern sztratigráfiát.
A neves tudománytörténész, Karl Alfred von Zittel a Geschichte der Geologie und Palaeontologie bis Ende des 19 Jahrhunderts című nagyszabású művében így méltatta a kötetet: „A fosszilis organizmusok időrendi egymásutániságának bemutatására tett első kísérlet H. G. Bronn Lethaea Geognostica című művében található. Ez a munka a tudományosság remekműve; összefoglal mindent, amit korábban a sztratigráfiáról (rétegtanról) és a paleontológiáról (őslénytanról) tudni lehetett. Az összes geológiai formáció legfontosabb fosszíliatípusai láthatók a fólió formátumú táblákon...”

Egységes, korabeli, aranyozott gerincű félbőr kötésben, márványozott táblákkal. A gerincen aranyozott feliratú kék címvignetta. A tábkák enyhén rozsdafoltosak. Az atlasz gerincének felső része sérült. Körül kéken pettyezett lapélekkel. A címlapon possessori rájegyzés és ex libris. Nagyon szép példány.
Heinrich Georg Bronn (1800–1862), a German zoologist and paleontologist, produced his magnum opus in Lethaea geognostica, which stands as one of the most significant milestones in 19th-century geology and paleontology, serving as a definitive standard work of the discipline in its era. Through detailed, comprehensive descriptions and illustrations compiled into a separate atlas – including 47 folio-sized lithographs, two tables, and a fold-out plate – the book presents the index fossils most characteristic of various rock and mountain formations. Bronn was among the first scientists to introduce a statistical and chronological framework to the study of organic remains, effectively laying the groundwork for modern stratigraphy. As the eminent historian of science Karl Alfred von Zittel noted in his History of Geology and Palaeontology: "The first attempt at a Chronological Succession of fossil organisms is to be found in H.G. Bronn's Lethaea Geognostica. This work is a masterpiece of scholarship; it summarises all that was previously known about Stratigraphy and Paleontology. The most important fossil types of all geological formations are shown on the folio plates..."
