First German edition of Thuróczy's original Chronica Hungarorum, published in 1488.

An extremely rare work, in excellent condition, with an exceptionally exciting provenance.

The text has been modified in many respects compared to the original: the first 140 of the 158 chapters were heavily abridged, leaving out many Hungarian names, especially those that were burdensome for the German reader. The last 18 chapters continue where Thuróczy stopped, i.e. King Matthias' campaign in Austria up to the Battle of Mohács; the text's source of knowledge is still unclear.

The translator is Hans Hauge zum Freystan, who explicitly mentions his contribution in the colophons. The National Széchényi Library has three examples of this 1534 edition. Comparing them, it can be seen that in two of the volumes (Ant. 1218 and Ant. 1866) the Viennese inserts described by Benzing are indeed to be found, whereas in the third copy originating from the library of Sándor Apponyi the four letters mentioned are not in the Singbe-Nius typeface but in the original Nuremberg typeface. Therefore, we are not dealing with an addition to all the copies, but with two variants: one from Nuremberg and one from Vienna. Our copy is the latter.

Thuróczy eredeti 1488-ban megjelent Chronica Hungarorumjának első német kiadása. A szöveg sok tekintetben módosult az eredetihez képest: az első 140 fejezet a 158 közül erősen rövidítve, főleg a német olvasóra terhes sok magyar név elhagyásával készült. Az utolsó 18 fejezet forrása pedig, amely ott folytatja, ahol Thuróczy abbahagyta, azaz Mátyás király ausztriai hadjáratától a mohácsi vészig terjedő korszakot tárgyalja, a mai napig is tisztázatlan forrásból ered. A fordító Hans Hauge zum Freystan, aki e tevékenységét a kolofonokban kifejezetten fel is tüntette. Az Országos Széchényi Könyvtár három példánnyal is rendelkezik ebből az 1534. évi kiadásból. Összehasonlítva ezeket, megállapítható, hogy két kötetben (Ant. 1218 és Ant. 1866) valóban a Benzing által leírt bécsi betétlapok találhatók, ezzel szemben a harmadik, Apponyi Sándor könyvtárából származó példányban az említett négy levél nem a Singbe-Nius-féle, hanem az eredeti nürnbergi betűkkel készült, így tehát nem az összes példányban végrehajtott kiegészítésről van itt szó, hanem két variánsról: egy nürnbergiről és egy bécsiről. Jelen példány az utóbbi variáns.
