Physical Description and Decoration A commentary on the Gospel according to Luke. Set in a single-column layout with Latin Gothic type. Features ten-line large initials at the start of chapters and three-line initials at the beginning of sentences. Sentence-starting letters are highlighted by hand in red. Contains 19th-century pencil marginalia with expert annotations. A pencil-written table of contents is found on the flyleaf. The leaves are clean throughout.
About the Author Saint Ambrose of Milan (Trier, 339 – Milan, 397), bishop and Doctor of the Church, was one of the four great early Latin Church Fathers of Western Christianity. He was the first Latin Father to be born and raised in the Christian faith. His sermons, actions, and writings made him one of the most defining ecclesiastical figures of the 4th century. A prolific writer, he authored two major Latin theological works: On the Sacraments and On the Holy Spirit. He also composed hymns and had a significant influence on Christian sacred music and liturgy through the introduction of hymn singing. Ambrose was a Christian universalist, believing that ultimately all people would achieve salvation. Another unique trait was his sexual interpretation of the Fall of Adam and Eve, suggesting that their fall consisted in the loss of virginity.
Binding and Provenance Bound in a somewhat later full leather binding with red edges. The spine is a later, repaired full parchment with a title label. The binding is worn, opening and detaching at the boards. Pasted on the front inner board is an ex libris: Ex libris reverendissimi Joannis episcopi Portsmonthensis. Provenance: In the possession of the Bishop of Portsmouth at the end of the 19th century.
Rarity This incunable is not found in any Hungarian public institutions. Aside from the binding, it is in excellent condition.

Kommentár az evangéliumhoz Lukács szerint. Egyhasábos tördelés, gót latin betűkkel. Tíz soros, fejezetkezdő nagy iniciálékkal, három soros mondatkezdő iniciálékkal. A mondatkezdő betűk kézzel, piros színnel kiemelve. 19. századi ceruzás marginális, szakértő kéz általi bejegyzésekkel. Az előzéken ceruzás tartalomjegyzék. Levelei végig tiszták.
Milánói Szent Ambrus (Trier, 339-Milánó, 397) püspök, egyháztanító, A nyugati kereszténységben a négy nagy, korai latin egyházdoktor egyike. Az első latin egyházatya, aki keresztény hitben született és nevelkedett. Prédikációi, tettei és írásai a 4. század egyik legmeghatározóbb egyházi személyiségévé tették. Termékeny író volt, két latin nyelvű nagy teológiai művet írt: A szentségekről és A Szentlélekről". Himnuszokat is írt és jelentős hatással volt a keresztény szakrális zenére és a himnuszéneklés bevezetésével az istentiszteletre. Ambrus keresztény univerzalista volt; hitte, hogy végül minden ember el fogja érni az üdvösséget. Másik egyedi vonása Ádám és Éva bukásának szexuális értelmezése, amely szerint bukásuk a szüzesség elvesztésében állt.
Valamivel későbbi egész bőrkötésben, körül piros élfestéssel. Későbbi, rájavított egészpergamen gerinccel, címkével. Kötése kopott, a tábláknál megnyílik, leválik. Az első tábla verzóján beragasztott ex libris: Ex libris reverendissimi Joannis episcopi Portsmonthensis. Proveniencia: Portsmouth püspökének tulajdonában a 19. század végén.
