Mappa Aestivarum Insularum Alias Barmudas...

A Bermuda-szigetcsoport színezett, Henricus Hondius által készített rézmetszetű térképe, amely a Nouvel Atlas című munkában jelent meg. A lap Richard Norwood 1618-as felmérése, és annak John Speed nevéhez köthető 1627-es térképkiadása alapján készült. A térképmező alatt elhelyezkedő táblázatot – amely a tulajdonosok adatait tartalmazza – kétoldalt a Brit Birodalom és Bermuda címere zárja le. A metsző ezeken kívül egy szélrózsát és két kartust használt illusztrációként. Hátoldalán francia nyelvű szöveg található.

A térkép érdekessége, hogy a szélein távoli szárazföldeket ábrázol, köztük Floridát, Virginiát, Cape Codot és Új-Angliát. Közelebbről megvizsgálva azonban kiderül, hogy a térkép a Norwood-felmérést kombinálja Bermuda és az észak-amerikai gyarmatok kapcsolatának ábrázolásával. Közvetlenül a kartus alatt egy kisebb, nagyobb léptékű ábrázolás látható Bermudáról. Ez a rajz később megzavart néhány másolót, például Herman Mollt és Antonio Zattát, akik változatukból kihagyták a szárazföldet, de tévesen megtartották a kisebb „Bermudát”, és így tévesen egy apró, nem létező szigetet alakítottak ki Bermuda partjainál.

A coloured copperplate map of Bermuda by the Dutch Henricus Hondius, published in the work Nouvel Atlas. The map is based on Richard Norwood's 1618 survey and its 1627 publishing by John Speed. Norwood divided the island into parishes and then strips, which were then sold to shareholders. These shareholders are listed in the table running along the bottom of the map.

The map vividly highlights the perilous nature of Bermuda’s coastline for shipping, with an almost continuous ring of crosses marking the reefs encircling the island. In the lower left corner, the Royal Arms of Great Britain are displayed, while the lower right features Bermuda’s coat of arms, depicting the wreck of the ship Sea Venture. The engraver also used a wind rose and two cartouches as illustrations.

Interestingly, the map initially appears to depict distant landmasses near its edges, including Florida, Virginia, Cape Cod, and New England. However, closer inspection reveals that the map combines the Norwood survey with an illustration of Bermuda’s relationship to the North American colonies. A smaller depiction of Bermuda at a larger scale is visible just below the cartouche. This design later confused some copyists like Herman Moll and Antonio Zatta, who omitted the mainland in their versions but mistakenly kept the smaller “Bermuda,” inadvertently turning it into a tiny island off Bermuda’s coast.
