Második kiadás. Voltaire La Pucelle d’Orléans című műve a felvilágosodás egyik legmerészebb alkotása, éles szatíra, amely a babonaságot és a vallást támadja. A költeményt a római egyház hivatalosan indexre tette 1757. januárjában. Ugyanabban az évben Párizsban nyolc nyomdászt és könyvkötőt büntettek meg, miután a hatóságok lelepleztek egy titokban működő nyomdát, amely „tekintélyes személyek ellen íródott verseket” készített, köztük a La Pucelle-t is. A mű semmit sem kímél: többek között szerepel benne Lourdis, a hiszékeny szerzetes látogatása a Bolondság birodalmába, valamint Szent Dénes (a franciák oldalán) és Szent György (az angolok oldalán) tréfás égi csatája. Voltaire 1730-ban kezdte el a művet, és húsz éven át dolgozott rajta, egyes énekeket barátai között terjesztve, például d’Argental, La Vallière hercege, II. Frigyes és Madame de Pompadour körében – ami számos kéziratos példány terjedéséhez vezetett. second edition. Voltaire’s La Pucelle d’Orléans, one of the Enlightenment’s boldest works, is a biting satire attacking superstition and religion. The poem was placed on the Index by the Roman Court on January 20, 1757. That same year, in Paris, eight printers and bookbinders were punished after authorities uncovered a secret press producing “verses against persons of dignity,” including La Pucelle. The poem spares nothing: it includes, among other irreverent scenes, the naïve monk Lourdis’s visit to the kingdom of Folly and a humorous celestial battle between Saint Denis (for the French) and Saint George (for the English). Voltaire began the work in 1730 and expanded it over twenty years, circulating individual cantos among friends such as d’Argental, the Duke of La Vallière, Frederick II, and Madame de Pompadour - leading to many manuscript copies in circulation. The original edition in fifteen books finally appeared in 1755 (published in Louvain), though Voltaire publicly disowned it. In 1762, he issued the first official edition in Geneva with the publisher Cramer.
