Howard Staunton (1810 – 1874) angol sakkmester volt, akit 1843-51 között a világ legerősebb sakkjátékosának tartottak. Nevet szerzett sakkíróként és Shakespeare-szakértőként is. Ő volt a sakkversenyeken máig használt szabvány sakk készlet reklámozója és elterjesztője. Ő szervezte meg a világ első nemzetközi sakktornáját Londonban, 1851-ben. 1847-ben megjelent műve, A sakkjátékos kézikönyve évtizedekig referenciamű maradt. Az angol megnyitás és a Staunton csel nevű megnyitások róla kapták a nevüket.

Valamivel későbbi bordázott és aranyozott gerincű igényes félbőr kötésben. Az első tábla verzóján beragasztott aranyozott vásznon sakktábla, Chess praxis Staunton felirattal. Alatta rajzos ex libris C.M. Bijl névvel. A címlapon a ma is működő Hastings Chess Club pecsétje.

Howard Staunton (1810–1874) was an English chess grandmaster who was considered the strongest chess player in the world from 1843 to 1851. He also made a name for himself as a chess writer and Shakespeare expert. He was the promoter and distributor of the standard chess set still used in chess tournaments today. He organized the world's first international chess tournament in London in 1851.
In a somewhat later, fine half-leather binding with a ribbed and gilded spine. On the verso of the first board, a chessboard on gilded canvas with the inscription Chess praxis Staunton. Beneath it, a drawn ex libris with the name C.M. Bijl. The title page features the seal of the Hastings Chess Club, which is still in operation today.
