F. de Belleforest Cosmographie Universelle című művét Nicolas Chesneau és Michel Sonnius közös kiadásában jelentették meg. A két partner célja az volt, hogy újra kiadják Sébastien Münster Cosmographie című művét franciául. Münster munkája, amely 1544-ben Bázelben jelent meg, valóban nagy siker volt, és számos újranyomást ért meg. 1552-ben már kiadták franciául, de Chesneau és Sonnius, észrevéve, hogy Münster főként a saját hazájával, Németországgal foglalkozott, jobban meg akarták felelni honfitársaik ízlésének.

The Cosmographie Universelle by F. de Belleforest was released in a joint edition by Nicolas Chesneau and Michel Sonnius. The partners' aim was to reprint Sébastien Münster's Cosmographie in French. Münster's original work, which was published in Basel in 1544, had been very successful and seen multiple reissues. It had been translated into French in 1552, but Chesneau and Sonnius observed that Münster had primarily focused on his own country, Germany. Consequently, they wished to better address the preferences of their French countrymen.
They commissioned François de Belleforest (1530-1583) to write the text for the work. Belleforest likely also assisted Chesneau and Sonnius in their search for new city plans.
Belleforest's Cosmographie is organized into two parts, with the first part being split into two volumes; thus, each of the three volumes has its own title. Some copies of the publication feature the imprint of Chesneau, while others bear the imprint of Sonnius.
Out of the 163 plates in the Cosmographie, only 49 are copied from Sebastian Münster's work. Little information is available about the Cosmographie's engravers. The name of Cruche appears only once, beneath the plate for Paris. Raymont Rancurel is the second known engraver for the Cosmographie. In 1572, the first volume of the Civitates Orbis Terrarum by Braun and Hogenberg was published. The Cosmographie of Belleforest copied twenty of these plates. Conversely, the later volumes of the Civitates subsequently borrowed eleven cities from Belleforest's work. Chesneau and Sonnius also selected more contemporary maps from Abraham Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (1570) than those found in Münster's work. Other plans were copied from Antoine Du Pinet's Plantz and Pourtraitz or from the small maps of Camocio.
