Italiae, Sardiniae, Corsicae, et confinium Regionum nova Tabula…

First edition of Italy's first spectacular, copper-engraved 'carte-a-figures' map, produced by Willem Janszoon.  Four states of the engraving are known, all of which are uniquely rare.

Blaeu relied on the map of Mercator’s 1589 Italy, while for the cityscapes of the beautiful Baroque decorative border, he scaled down engravings from the Braun–Hogenberg 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', with one exception. The depiction of Rome – which dominates the center of the upper border – was based on Hendrick van Cleef's five-sheet monumental work published by Henricus Hondius in The Hague. The four vignettes flanking each side of the sheet present the costumes of various Italian regions, while the four corners feature views of Venice, Genoa, Florence, and Naples. The engraver of the border and the decorative elements of the map field, Hessel Gerritsz, illustrated the work with ships, the depiction of a naval battle, two cartouches, and a refined compass rose. The imprint data is indicated on the right side at the bottom border line; the reverse is blank.

Olaszország első látványos, rézmetszetű, „carte-a-figures” térképének Willem Janszoon Blaeu által készített első kiadása. Kartográfiájában Mercator 1589-es Itáliájára támaszkodott, a gyönyörű barokk keretdísz városképeihez pedig a Braun-Hogenberg-féle „Civitates Orbis Terrarum” metszeteit kicsinyítette le, egy kivételével. Róma ábrázolása ugyanis – amely a felső bordűr közepét uralja – Hendrick van Cleef ötlapos, monumentális műve alapján készült, amelyet Henricus Hondius adott ki Hágában. A lap két oldalát övező négy-négy vignetta különböző olasz tájegységek viseleteit mutatja be, négy sarkában pedig Velence, Genova, Firenze és Nápoly látképe kapott helyet. Az keretdísz és a térképmező dekoratív elemeinek metszője, Hessel Gerritsz hajókkal, egy tengeri ütközet megjelenítésével, két kartussal és egy letisztult szélrózsával illusztrálta a munkát. Az impresszumadatokat jobb oldalon, az alsó keretvonalnál tüntették fel, a verzója üres. A metszet négy állapota ismert, amelyek mindegyike páratlanul ritka.
