A very rare first-edition large-paper issue of an important English colour-plate book, comprises 53 hand-coloured aquatint plates.
Among the earliest works to offer an eyewitness account of the Napoleonic Wars, the volume presents scenic views of Portugal and Spain. William Bradford, chaplain to the British Army during the Peninsular War, Britain’s intervention in Iberia in support of Spain and Portugal, based the work on his direct experiences. His drawings trace the army’s progress through Portugal and northern Spain, and he was among the chaplains who retreated to Corunna with Sir John Moore’s forces in January 1809.
The plates combine topographical views with studies of local costume encountered by Bradford, accompanied by text that follows the movements of the British forces from August 1808 to January 1809. Noted for their grandeur and gentle beauty, the aquatints allude only subtly to the devastation of the Napoleonic Wars, standing in marked contrast to the harrowing contemporary prints of Francisco de Goya y Lucientes.
Bradford’s Sketches was first issued in 24 parts between 1809 and 1810, and subsequently published in book form in 1810. The work was originally published on regular paper at a price of £11. The supplement, also present here, consists of 13 additional plates illustrating Spanish, Portuguese, and French military uniforms.
