The first German translation by Steinmetz, Johann Adam of Arnoldus Montanus (c. 1625–1683) work on the Netherlands and Great Britain, originally published in Dutch. Monatus was a Dutch teacher and author who published books on theology, history, and geography of both the Netherlands and faraway countries. This work offers a comprehensive and supposedly reliable account of England (and Britain more broadly), covering its geography, cities, government, customs, religion, economy, and daily life. It aims to inform German-speaking readers about the political power, cultural practices, and natural features of England and its part of the colonisation of the New World. The work reflects the period’s growing curiosity about foreign nations and combines historical sources, travel reports, and contemporary observations. The book is illustrated with five copper plates, depicting contemporary naval-battles.
