George Roland Treatise című, rendkívül népszerűvé vált szakkönyve volt a legelső olyan vívókönyv, amelyet kőnyomatos metszetekkel illusztráltak; a képeket George Simson készítette. George Roland’s Treatise on fencing was the very first manual of the art to be illustrated by lithographic engravings, with plates created by George Simson. Following its initial success, the highly popular work saw a second edition in 1824, and was later published in the 1830s in an abbreviated version over two editions under the title An Introductory Course of Fencing.
The author, George Roland, was a prominent fencing master and writer who initially ran his father Joseph's successful fencing academy in London. In 1820, he moved to Edinburgh to fill the vacancy left by the death of John Xavier Tremamondo, subsequently becoming the professor of arms at the Scottish Naval and Military Academy. Inspired by the influence of Domenico Angelo - who played a key role in popularising fencing as a sport - Roland founded his theories on the core principle of reducing the art to its utmost simplicity, combined with the perfect execution of every movement.
