Ezt a könyvet az ország akkoriban megjelent leghitelesebb beszámolójaként tartják számon (Cox). Az eredeti német szövegből Johann Caspar Scheuchzer, Sir Hans Sloane (ír orvos, természettudós, gyűjtő) könyvtárosa fordította, aki a szerző halála után szerezte meg Kaempfer kéziratát és botanikai mintáit. A német eredeti szöveg csak ötven évvel később jelent meg nyomtatásban. A klasszikus, alapvető mű Japánról abból az időszakból, amikor az európaiak számára általános beutazási tilalom volt érvényben. A rézmetszetek között megtalálható a szép Japán-térkép (Walter 76A), továbbá terület- és várostérképek, városképek (köztük Jedo és Nagasaki), mitológiai és kultikus ábrázolások, növények (pl. tea), állatok, valamint néhány írástáblázat.

The plates include numerous forms of the Japanese alphabet, views, plants, the island world, buildings, and maps.
Regarded as the most authoritative contemporary account of Japan available in Europe at the time (Cox). The work was translated from the original German manuscript by Johann Caspar Scheuchzer, librarian to Sir Hans Sloane (the Irish physician, naturalist, and collector), who acquired Kaempfer’s manuscript and botanical specimens after the author’s death. The German original did not appear in print until fifty years later.
A classic and foundational work on Japan from the period of the sakoku, the strict isolation policy banning almost all European entry. The copper engravings include the handsome map of Japan (Walter 76A), as well as regional and town maps, city views (including Jedo and Nagasaki), mythological and religious scenes, depictions of plants (including tea), animals, and several writing tables.
Bound in contemporary full calf with raised bands and gilt spine labels. Lacking pp. 17–20 (quire E) of the Appendix in vol. II. Otherwise a good, wide-margined and scarce copy, containing a total of 45 interesting plates. With the armorial bookplate of Sir Robert Eden, first Baronet of Maryland, on the verso of the boards.
