A francia államvasutak plakátja, mely Bretagne régió Saint Brieuc városának gótikus katedrálisát ábrázolja. A francia állami vasúti vállalatot, a Chemins de Fer de l'État-t, 1878-ban hozták létre tíz kisebb, veszteséges vasúttársaság átvételére. Najd 1938. január 1-jén az Állami Vasutak egyesült a többi francia vasúttársasággal létrehozva a Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français-t (SNCF), a máig működő Franciaország nemzeti vasúttársaságot.

The company Chemins de Fer de l’État was established by state order of the Third Republic on 25 May 1878 to take over ten small failing railway companies. On 1 January 1938 the État merged with the other French railway companies to form the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français (SNCF).
