A látszólag idilli képen - előtérben díszegyeruhában a császári és királyi hadsereg képviselői és kíséretük, háttérben a Balaton és a Széchenyi István kezdeményezésére épített első balatoni gőzhajó, a Kisafaludy gőzös - a feszültésget a szereplők mozdulatai és tartása tükrözi. Az 1848. szeptember 21-i találkozókísérlet a magyar szabadságharc egyik drámai politikai kudarca volt, amely a Balaton közepén, a Kisfaludy gőzös fedélzetén zajlott volna le. István nádor utolsó békéltető gesztusként hívta tárgyalásra a Budára tartó Jelačić bánt, ám a találkozó érdemben sosem jött létre, mert a bán – környezete tanácsára és a nádor tekintélyét megkerülve – nem volt hajlandó a hajóra lépni. A gőzös ugyan megközelítette a siófoki partot, de a felek csak üzenetvivők útján érintkeztek, így a diplomáciai megoldás végleg elúszott. Ez a sikertelenség vezetett István főherceg néhány nappal későbbi lemondásához és váratlan távozásához, amivel elhárult az utolsó politikai akadály is a fegyveres összecsapás, a szeptember 29-i pákozdi csata elől.

In the seemingly idyllic image, the tension is reflected in the gestures and postures of the figures—the foreground shows representatives of the Imperial and Royal Army in ceremonial uniforms, while the background features Lake Balaton and the Kisfaludy, the first steamer on the lake, built at the initiative of István Széchenyi.
The attempted meeting on September 21, 1848, was a dramatic political failure of the Hungarian War of Independence. Palatine Stephen invited Ban Jelačić onto the steamer for a final reconciliation effort, but Jelačić refused to board, bypassing the Palatine’s authority. Communicating only through messengers, the diplomatic solution collapsed. This failure led to the Palatine’s resignation and departure, removing the last political obstacle to the armed conflict that culminated in the Battle of Pákozd on September 29.
The title is provided in four languages (German, Hungarian, Italian, and Czech) along the four sides of the image. The print is plate number 14 from the first part of Anton Ziegler’s Vaterländische Bilder-Chronik aus der Geschichte des österreichischen Kaiserstaates (Patriotic Pictorial Chronicle from the History of the Austrian Imperial State), published by Benko in Vienna, 1850. This second part contains a description of the 1848–1849 events in Hungary, illustrated with 28 cityscapes (including Buda, Buda and Pest, Bratislava, Prague, Vienna, Belgrade, Trieste, Graz, Innsbruck, etc.), as well as 56 historical genre scenes and battle paintings.
